In the Blue
Erin Hourigan, Little Brown & Co. 2022

At last, a young child’s book about living with an adult suffering from depression! The text is in the voice of a young child who describes her father as filled with yellow and golden joyful light - until "Right now, things for my dad aren’t bright and yellow. They are a deep, dark blue". The Dad tries to be responsive, but can’t. "When he’s ready, my dad visits people who help him. I go to someone too". The illustrations show the loving father and mother, the whole family draped in sadness and blue, and the slow recovery into the golden light. At the back of the book there is a page of resources for children and families coping with mental illness.
