Featured books: Side by Side – Lado a Lado

In celebration of the life of Cesar Chavez and the end of Women’s History Month we are featuring this wonderful book. The lives of Dolores Huerta and Cesar Chavez are carefully and simply told in this dual biography of two people who dramatically changed the conditions of farm workers in California. The book tells the story of their hard work organizing farm workers into a union, creating the great grape boycott, and leading the 340 mile march from the fields to the State Capital to demand better working conditions. Every page is beautifully illustrated in ways that support children understanding what is happening. And every page treats Dolores and Cesar as equals – working together for justice. Bravo!

In the following video posted by FoodCorps Story Time Friday is in honor of Farmworker Awareness Week which occurs March 25th-31st. After the story, grab a fruit or veggie that is near by and participate in a mindful eating activity led by Ms. Quiñones.
